Should Kids be Offered Social Media Training?

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie received a proposed bill from lawmakers that would make social media training part of their school experience. The instruction would be targeted for students in grades 6 through 8, and it would focus on teaching kids how to use social media responsibly.

Classes would cover cyber safety; including what information should and should not be shared online, who kids should talk to or “friend” online, and how to avoid predators online. Classes would also cover cyber bullying; what cyber bullying actually is, why it is dangerous and wrong, and how to watch out for it.

Finally students would be educated on the long term negative affects of posting things online. Valerie Vainieri Huttle, Assemblywoman of Bergen County asserts that it has become important o teach children at a young age how to use online tools responsibly, so they can avoid mistakes that could potential affect them for the rest of their lives.

It will be interesting how this bill pans out. Issues related to cyber safety and cyber bullying have reached critical levels. Across the country kids are committing suicide as a result of cyber bullying. Predators have moved online and are reaching out to kids through social media.

Additionally, many adults are learning the consequences of posting things online as more colleges, employers, even lending institutions are searching applicants online to see what they find. People are being fired because of pictures and comments posted online. Young adults are finding they are unable to get jobs because of comments and pictures of them found online. In some cases, the questionable pictures or comments are from years earlier.

More websites are popping up that focus on highlighting pictures of college students at drunken parties. Those pictures don’t go away, and what seems fun and harmless as a college student, seems very different as a new job applicant.
